Buenos Aires received the Smart City of 2021 award at the Smart City Expo World Congress for its Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan that converts organic waste into electricity for 20,000 homes.
The recognition arrives as the city works toward its carbon-neutral target for 2050. Officials have linked the award to earlier decisions on waste processing and street lighting that produced measurable savings and new infrastructure.
Technology district upgrades
Plan Nanocentro is changing a technology district through public-private steps that include new bicycle paths, a bus rapid transit system and real-time safety information for residents. The effort centers on the area around the city government’s new offices and ties into the broader push for open data tools such as CIUDAD 3D.
Buenos Aires became the first Latin American city to earn What Works Cities Gold certification and posted a 100 percent data openness rating. Those steps followed the launch of CIUDAD 3D, which supports urban planning decisions with three-dimensional models.
Lighting retrofit and mobility numbers
Since 2013 the city has replaced 91,000 street lights with LEDs and installed a smart management system. By 2019 those changes delivered annual energy savings above 66,100 MWh and roughly $11.8 million in reduced costs, according to project records.
Separately, Buenos Aires has added 277 km of bike lanes, producing a 2,550 percent rise in bicycle trips. The network forms part of the Metrobús expansion that adds exclusive corridors for buses. Both programs are listed as direct contributions to the 2050 carbon-neutral goal.
City documents indicate further growth will come from continued Metrobús extensions and additional bike-lane segments already mapped under current plans. No new funding rounds or project timelines beyond those already under way appear in the records reviewed for this report.
