Buenos Aires upgrades rail crossings, stations with 4.06 billion pesos investment

The Argentine government has approved rail infrastructure work worth pesos 4.06 billion in La Matanza, part of the national Infrastructure Works Plan, according to a report published by Rail Journal on 18 July 2026.
The spending comes as the Milei administration seeks to stabilise the peso and meet IMF programme conditions while residents in western Buenos Aires continue to face long waits at level crossings and crowded platforms. The upgrades focus on the Belgrano South and Sarmiento lines that serve daily commuters travelling into the capital.
Underpasses replace crossings in Laferrere and Gonzalez Catan
Five underpasses will be built beneath the Belgrano South line at a cost of pesos 3.7 billion. Three of them will be located near Laferrere station and are scheduled to take one year to complete. The remaining two will be constructed in Gonzalez Catan over 18 months. The projects are expected to remove road-rail conflicts that currently slow both train frequencies and vehicle traffic in the area.
Additional work will modernise Ramos Mejia station on the Sarmiento line and Laferrere station on the Belgrano South line. Ramos Mejia improvements, budgeted at pesos 140 million, will last ten months and include a rebuilt central platform, new pedestrian accesses and an elevated platform on Rivadavia Avenue. Laferrere station upgrades, costing pesos 220 million, will take eight months and add new paving, lighting and landscaping.
Jobs and safety gains expected during construction
The five underpasses alone are forecast to create 1,089 construction jobs, with another 130 positions generated by the station works. The source material states that the underpasses will allow more frequent services, cut idling emissions and improve safety at the former level crossings.
Work is due to begin in the coming months under the existing national plan. Commuters on the affected lines can expect phased traffic changes around the construction sites, particularly near Laferrere and Gonzalez Catan stations, once contractors mobilise.
