Buenos Aires Schools Set 2026 Start Dates and Winter Break Amid Ongoing Reforms

The 2026 school year in Buenos Aires opens February 25 for initial and primary levels and March 2 for secondary students, with winter recess fixed from July 20 to 31 and classes concluding December 18.

Calendar anchors daily operations

These dates shape family schedules across the city right now, as July 15 places households one week from the break. The fixed timeline comes from the official education agenda published on the city government site, giving principals and parents concrete planning windows rather than shifting targets.

The dates matter because they overlap with the rollout of prior policy shifts. Primary schools have operated under a new academic regime since 2025 that uses conceptual marks in the first cycle and a mix of numerical and conceptual marks in the second cycle, plus supported promotion for students still catching up.

Infrastructure and curriculum changes advance

City spending exceeds 146.600 million pesos this year on 627 infrastructure projects, 134.000 school kits and 58.000 netbooks and tablets, according to the official bulletin. At the same time, 90 new Secundaria Aprende schools stand ready to introduce project-based learning across 33 existing colleges in 2026, dropping the old subject-by-subject division.

Primary language classes also switched in 2025 from the earlier psychogenetic approach to a more structured sequence that includes personalized teacher support, listed in the Buenos Aires Aprende program documents. Teachers can access the free +Alfabetización platform, which already has more than 3.000 educators signed up for first- and second-grade literacy tools.
