Experts and Officials Stress Services Sector Role in City Output Figures

City officials and economic analysts are pointing to the services sector as the main driver of Buenos Aires output, citing its contribution of roughly 73 percent of the Producto Geográfico Bruto. Reports prepared by the city government show this share exceeds the national average of 66 percent, largely because of stronger real estate and financial activities within the capital.

Three sectors dominate local production

The same documents indicate that services, commerce and manufacturing together generate more than 81 percent of city billing. Officials reviewing the 2023 results have highlighted that the overall PGB rose 1.6 percent that year, with services production expanding 2.3 percent and accounting for most of the gain. These figures come from the city’s economic monitoring documents released in early 2025.

The concentration of technology and cultural activities continues to support Buenos Aires’ position as one of the country’s higher per-capita PGB locations. Experts familiar with the data say this mix helps maintain the city’s status as a national financial and business hub even when other sectors record slower movement.

Revenue collections show real-term drop

City budget figures for 2024 record own-source revenue at 8.703.576 million constant pesos, an 18 percent real decline from the previous year. Analysts examining the treasury data note that the fall occurred alongside the services-led expansion recorded in 2023, prompting discussion about how future budgets will balance these trends.

Local observers say the combination of sector concentration and revenue pressure will shape policy choices in the months ahead. They point to the need for continued monitoring of services output and collections data to assess whether the 2023 growth pattern holds into later years.
